7 Reasons Your Child Might Not Be Eating, Sleeping, or Behaving Well — And It Has Nothing to Do With Parenting

Por MD. Leslie Rodriguez

Summary: If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already tried everything.

The expensive probiotic you saw on TikTok. Going dairy-free. Iron syrup. Melatonin. Zinc gummies. Coconut oil on everything. The three-week gluten-free diet that cost you twice as much at the grocery store and changed absolutely nothing.

And still — every morning — your child wakes up cranky, pushes breakfast away, complains of a tummy ache before school, or just seems off. Like something invisible is stealing their energy.

Doctors tell you it’s normal. That it’s a phase. That they’ll grow out of it.

But you know them better than anyone. And you know something isn’t right.

This list is for you.

1. He's not "picky" — his gut is sending him a signal

There's a difference between a child who simply prefers nuggets to broccoli and a child whose gut actively rejects food.

When the digestive system is out of balance, the body literally suppresses appetite as a protective mechanism. It's not a tantrum. It's not manipulation. It's biology.

If your child eats well on holidays or weekends but loses their appetite during the school week — that's no coincidence.

Daycare, the school cafeteria, sharing snacks, touching everything at the park then putting fingers in the mouth... their digestive system is working overtime with no rest.

The signal isn't: "I don't want to eat." The real signal is: "something inside of me is disrupting my desire to eat."

2. Teeth grinding at night has a name — and it’s not childhood stress

If your child grinds their teeth in their sleep, you’ve probably already Googled it and found: “childhood bruxism. Cause: stress or anxiety. Solution: mouthguard.”

End of conversation.

But there’s something most websites don’t mention: nocturnal bruxism in children is also documented as a nervous system response to intestinal irritation.

Not emotional stress. Physical irritation. Internal. Invisible.

When the gut is out of balance, the entire nervous system feels it — including during sleep.

Does your child grind their teeth AND have interrupted sleep AND wake up tired even though they slept their hours? Those three together are not a coincidence. They are a pattern.

3. Dark circles in children are not always due to lack of sleep

4. What your pediatrician doesn't mention at your annual check-up — and why

5. An irritated gut does strange things to behavior — things that look like "attitude."

This is what hurts the most.

Because when your child is irritable, uncooperative, cries for no reason, throws tantrums that are not age-appropriate, or is simply "difficult" — everyone's first instinct (teachers, family, the pediatrician) is to look at you.

"How's the dynamic at home?"
"Does he get enough sleep?"
"Are you very stressed lately?"

And you internalize all that as your failure.

But the gut-brain axis is real. It's scientifically documented. The gut produces more than 90% of the body's serotonin. When the gut is inflamed, irritated, or imbalanced, the brain feels it first — and expresses it as behavior.

A child who seems impossible to control sometimes simply has a gut that is crying out for help — and the only language available is crying, irritability, and resistance.

It's not parenting. It's gut biology.

6. Probiotics alone aren't enough — and here's why

Probiotics are wonderful. They are the good guys you want in your child's gut.

But there's a logical problem no one talks about:

Putting probiotics into a gut that hasn't been "cleaned" first is like painting a wall without sanding it first.

The paint won't last.

If the gut environment isn't balanced—if there are imbalances that probiotics aren't designed to address—the good bacteria you introduce have very little room to take hold and work.

That's why there are moms who have given probiotics for months without seeing any real change. It's not that the probiotic is bad. It's that they were skipping a step.

The step that comes first is the reset. The internal cleanse. Preparing the ground.

After that, probiotics work as they should.

7. What thousands of moms are adding to their morning juice — before anything else

Estamos tan agradecidas."
